In some respects, you could call this an antithesis to Good Will Hunting, but it is far deeper than what Damon and Affleck created. Rob Reiner never got better than this, only A Few Good Men came close to his elaboration here.
Stephen King is one of modern America's better authors, even better than Mary Higgins Clark (now I've done it) because he knows subtext unlike such junk writers as Tom Clancy and John Grisham. Rob Reiner taps into King's genius and creates a film that is both memorable and understanding of its topic.
Coming of age and self-discovery are tough topics to understand and even harder to present. Reiner is not the most artistically sound director, but he uses the camera here to trade in for the emotional impact the four boys suffer in their journey. While their interaction isn't the greatest when describing their personal lives, the script is loaded with enough dialog reminiscent of sixth grade conversations.
Some general shortcomings include the use of the bullies. They really aren't needed, the same conclusions reached by the end could have been done with alternative means or symbolism. There is a degree of aloofness that distances the audience at times, but Reiner knows how to control our emotions.
Overall, a well made film worth watching for the post-adolescent. In a world where creativity is becoming tied to political affiliation, I am proud to accept this film. Thankfully, it doesn't waste time being preachy. 4 out of 5 stars.
